Food for Thought...

What if a whole school incorporates or utiltizes the "invitations" ideology? What would it take to be successful? What obstacles might you encounter?

One of the obstacles we talked about in our jigsaw group yesterday (Sandra, Kristi, and myself) was how to mesh the invitations ideology with curricular requirements such as GPS. We thought this could be difficult at first, but that thinking outside of the box we saw that many "requisite" standards are directly connected to the work students have engaged in already . . . In the Funds of Knowledge article we see the same thing with the candy inquiry project. The authors point out the connections to a myriad of curricular areas--science, math, health, consumer education, advertising, etc. In order for a school to incorporate invitations school-wide, teachers will be challenged to step outside of a comfortable tradition of set teaching practices--that perhaps would be the greatest challenge.
